Johanna M. Seddon, MD, ScM is Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMass Chan), Interim Chair of the Department and Director of the Residency Program. She is also Founding Director of the Macular Degeneration Center of Excellence at UMass Chan, and Director of the Retina Service at UMass Memorial Health Eye Center. Dr. Seddon is a renowned practicing retina specialist and genetic and nutritional epidemiologist.

Dr. Seddon pioneered studies of the etiology and prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and she is recognized for her groundbreaking research and discoveries related to lifestyle factors (smoking, body mass index, abdominal adiposity, exercise), nutrition (dietary lutein, zeaxanthin, green, leafy vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids) and the associations of these modifiable factors with AMD. The advice to follow these healthy habits, supported by her early research, has changed the management of macular degeneration world-wide. Her work was translated into the science-based cookbook “Eat Right for Your Sight”, which she co-authored.

Richard Rosen, MD

Dr. Rosen is a vitreoretinal surgeon and consultant at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he serves as Vice Chairman and Director of Ophthalmology Research, as well as Surgeon Director and Chief of Retinal Services. Dr. Rosen is Professor of Ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Visiting Professor in Applied Optics at the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK.

He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology and anthropology at the University of Michigan and his MD from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He also did graduate work in psychophysics in the Laboratory of Neuromagnetism at New York University, and worked for several years as a professional photographer in New York City, with an interest in ophthalmic/scientific photography.

Dimitra Skondra, MD,PhD, FASRS, an internationally renowned vitreoretinal surgeon and physician scientist, is the Terry and Mel Karmazin Professor Ophthalmology & Visual Science and Vice Chair of Research at NYU Langone. She is also the founder and leader the Retinal Microbiome and Retina Big Data/Bioinformatics team. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Weill Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital and her PhD/postdoctoral fellowship and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Harvard Medical School at the renowned Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary.
